Lemon Tree Fertilizer

Lemon trees are part of the rue family, a genus of trees and shrubs that originated in Asia and Australasia and are commonly known as citrus plants. When growing lemon trees it is necessary to use a lemon tree fertilizer because citrus plants and fruit trees of all varieties require large amounts of nutrients to produce fruit.  An unproductive lemon tree is likely the result of a lack of nutrients. Lemon trees need both macro and micronutrients to thrive, and those nutrients need to be added in the right amounts, at the right time, and often enough.

Lemon Tree Fertilizer Types

The lemon tree fertilizer you choose should be high in nitrogen and should not be too concentrated. By checking the NPK ratio of the fertilizer you can determine its concentration. A fertilizer with an NPK ratio of 20-20-20 has double the concentration of nutrients compared to a fertilizer with a 10-10-10 ratio. When it comes to fertilizing lemon trees, a ratio where each number is no higher than eight is sufficient.  The ideal NPK ratio for lemon tree fertilizer is 6-6-6. This means it contains equal parts nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. This balanced mix of nutrients will ensure your lemon trees have access to all the macronutrients they need to grow strong and healthy and to produce a crop of delicious, juicy fruit.  To give them an extra boost, or to rectify any nutrient deficiencies in the soil, it is best to use a lemon tree fertilizer that also contains the main micronutrients citrus trees need. The main micronutrients required by lemon trees in trace amounts are nickel, iron, zinc, copper, boron, manganese, molybdenum, and chlorine.

Lemon Tree Fertilizer Application

It is necessary to apply lemon tree fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growth part of the season, which is during the spring and summer. It is best not to feed lemon trees during the winter months.  Apply the fertilizer in a ring around the lemon tree that is as wide as the tree is tall. This ensures the fertilizer seeps into the soil where the roots are, making the nutrients available to the entire root system.  While the lemon tree is growing it is important to add fertilizer regularly each year. During the growing period, which typically lasts around eight years, a lemon tree needs around 10kg of balanced fertilizer in total. Once it has reached maturity, fertilization becomes less important as less energy and nutrition is required by the tree.
