Organic nitrogen fertilizer: what it is

Nitrogen is one of the most important and also one of the most volatile nutrients that plants need. Chemical nitrogen fertilizers often end up in the groundwater or the atmosphere. NPK (Nitrogen Phosphorus and Potassium) are the primary macronutrients that plants need. They are referred to as macro nutrients because they are required in larger quantities than the micro nutrients or trace elements. Nitrogen plays an important role in the development of leaves and the process of photosynthesis.

Plants for which the development of leaves or greens is more important will need more nitrogen than plants where the focus lies on blooming and flowering. When plants suffer from a Nitrogen deficiency leaves will turn yellow and plant growth will be halted, Nitrogen is essential for a plant’s survival as plants rely on it to form protein. Nitrogen can be found in the atmosphere and might be naturally present in the soil, but rarely in sufficient amounts. Therefore, adding Nitrogen to the soil is almost always necessary. In principle, organic and synthetic fertilizers serve the same purpose: to provide crops with the required nutrients.
